best high schools in Silicon Valley
It's pretty hard to assess the "best," but here are my general impressions on the good high schools, based on growing up around here:
Private schools
- The Harker School, San Jose
- Menlo School, Atherton
- Castilleja School (all girls), Palo Alto
These three schools all have great resources available to students, and from what I hear, provide a lot of opportunities. For one, Castilleja was at one point in its history widely considered a "feeder school" to Stanford. However, these schools are (in my mind, absurdly) expensive. Tuition goes up every year, but they're in the ballpark of $30,000+ per year, and these are not boarding schools.
Catholic schools
- Bellarmine College Preparatory (all boys), San Jose
Technically, this category of schools belongs in private schools as well, but I consider them in a separate bracket because the tuition numbers are about half that of the other private schools. The Diocese of San Jose runs these schools not to turn a profit but to provide a service to the Catholic community.
Public schools
- Gunn High School, Palo Alto
- Palo Alto High School, Palo Alto
These two Palo Alto schools often turn up in national rankings of public schools, based on some metric related to AP tests. I've heard anecdotally that many sons and daughters of Stanford professors or other affiliates attend Gunn or Paly.
Public schools (the Asian ones)
- Lynbrook High School, San Jose
- Monta Vista High School, Cupertino
- Saratoga High School, Saratoga
