If English is not your native language, you may be asked to show your proficiency by taking one of the following tests (results must be from the last two years):

  • TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test)
  • IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System)
  • PTE Academic (Pearsons Test of English Academic)
How do I know if I need to take a language proficiency test?

You do not need to if:

  • English is your native language.
  • You have been studying in a school or college/university where the sole language of instruction is English for at least three years at the time of your application and you submit SAT, ACT, AP, or IB test results (English curriculum only).
  • You completed your education entirely in a school/college/university where the language of instruction was English.
What do I need to score on one of these tests?

We don’t have minimum score requirements. However, our top applicants typically score above 100 on the TOEFL iBT, 7.5 on the IELTS Academic, and 70 on the PTE Academic.

How can I improve my English skills before I apply?

One way is through the American Language Institute, which is housed at NYU.

What’s your code when submitting my TOEFL results?

NYU’s school code is 2562.

Is there anything else I should know?

A couple points to consider when applying to NYU as a non-native English speaker:

  • If you are a non-native English speaker pursuing a degree focused heavily on math and science, you’re encouraged to take a language proficiency test even if you are exempt from doing so.
  • If your application suggests that you might benefit from additional English-language support, you may be required to complete additional testing through NYU’s American Language Institute (ALI) before you arrive on campus. Based on this test, you may be asked to take additional English-language courses on campus. These courses are typically taken as part of your regular semester load, and only very rarely do they result in additional tuition costs and/or extended time for degree completion.
