First-year students enroll in the Colleges of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Business Nursing, Public Health, or Education. Specific requirements for these and the other UI colleges that admit undergraduates follow:
College of Liberal Arts & SciencesTo be admitted, you must:
- Meet the high school course requirements
- Meet the Regent Admission Index (RAI) score requirement of 245 or higher for Iowa residents, 255 or higher for residents of other states.
Application Deadlines
- May 1—for Fall Semester or Summer Session (March 1 for international applicants)
- December 5—for Spring Semester (October 1 for international applicants)
To be admitted, you must:
- Meet the minimum high school course requirements for engineering
- Present an ACT math score of 25 or higher (SAT math score of 620 or higher).
- Meet the Regent Admission Index (RAI) score requirement of 245 or higher for Iowa residents, 255 or higher for residents of other states.
Application Deadlines
- May 1—for Fall Semester or Summer Session (March 1 for international applicants)
- December 5—for Spring Semester (October 1 for international applicants)
The Tippie College of Business admits highly qualified first-year students through its Direct Admission Program. To be eligible for admission, you must:
- Meet the high school course requirements
- Present an ACT composite score of 26 or higher (or a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1170 or higher)
- Present a high school GPA of 3.60 or higher.
Applicants who meet the published criteria will be eligible for direct admission. Applicants who meet at least one of the published criteria will be evaluated under the careful consideration process. Careful consideration includes a comprehensive review of all application information, with emphasis on GPA and exam scores. Direct admission is for fall only.
First-year applicants who satisfy the admission criteria for the University of Iowa, but who are not admitted to the Tippie College of Business as a direct admit, may be admitted to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as a pre-business major.
College of Nursing—Early Decision ProgramThe college admits highly qualified first-year students. Students who aren’t admitted directly enroll in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, then apply for competitive admission to Nursing as juniors. To be eligible to apply for the Early Decision Program, you must meet three of these four criteria:
- Meet the high school course requirements.
- Present an ACT composite score of 28 or higher.
- Present an ACT science reasoning score of 25 or higher.
- Present a high school GPA of 3.80 or higher.
To be eligible for admission, you must:
- Meet high school course requirements
- Present an ACT composite of 26 or higher
- Present a GPA of 3.60 or higher
Applicants who meet these criteria will be strongly considered for direct admission. Admission is selective and available for fall only (starting for fall, 2016).
Applicants who meet course requirements and either the test score or GPA requirements also will be considered. Others are admitted to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as public health interest majors and can apply to public health after completing prerequisite courses and earning the required GPA.
College of EducationThe college offers degree and licensure programs for students interested in teaching at the elementary (grades K-6) and secondary (grades 7-12) levels.
First-year students enroll in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and indicate an interest in elementary education or major in the field they would like to teach (English, Spanish, mathematics, etc.) for secondary education. After completing required courses, students apply to a teacher education program in the College of Education. Admission is competitive.
First-year students who present an ACT composite score of 27 or higher and a high school GPA of 3.8 or higher are admitted directly to the Elementary Teacher Education Program.
Carver College of MedicineThe Carver College of Medicine offers undergraduate programs in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Radiation Sciences, and Nuclear Medicine Technology. Students interested in these majors should apply to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
College of PharmacyThe college offers a professional program leading to a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. First-year students enroll in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for two years of pre-pharmacy study and then apply to the PharmD program. Admission is highly competitive and very selective.
