Discussion of San Jose State's Admissions Standards:
About three-quarters of applicants are admitted to San Jose State, one of the 23 schools in the California State University System. Nevertheless, you'll need decent grades and test scores to get in. The green and blue dots in the above graph represent accepted students. The majority of successful applicants had "B" averages or higher, SAT scores (CR+M+W) of 1350 or higher, and ACT scores of 18 or higher. Some students with lower grades and scores also got in. However, note that there are some red dots (rejected students) in the middle of the graph. Some students with grades and test scores that seem to be on target for San Jose State will still get rejected.
Unlike the University of California System, the California State University admission process is not holistic. Except for EOP students, applicants do not need to submit letters of recommendation or an application essay, and extracurricular involvement is not part of the standard application.
Thus, the reason why an applicant with adequate scores and grades would be rejected tends to come down to a factor such as insufficient college preparatory classes or an incomplete application.
